As summer draws near, several students start making plans about what they want to do. There are several things that I want to do, but at the moment I see the necessity of finding a job.
By chance I came across a notice informing that there was going to be a recruitment day at a particular hotel. I sprang on the opportunity and went there armed with a couple of CVs. I expected there to be a presentation about the kind of jobs that are available in the hotel. Except, the recruitment day also had the first interview integrated within it and there was no explanation. I can see the reasons why, but that doesn't change the fact that a) I was under-dressed b) I wasn't prepared for an interview. The email I received contained no information about this whatsoever, save for a broken link. The hotel website didn't advertise the event, of course.
If I were to be honest, I would give myself 85% of the blame for this failure, but I would hold others responsible for it as well. I wasn't surprised that I was rejected, but it did sting a little.
Last Saturday there was a job fair. There were some interviews going on but I was at least prepared for them, even if I were under-dressed. If anyone asked, I would say the truth: "I was doing voluntary work just before I came here, I didn't have enough time to go back home, change into a suit and come back here again." No one made a remark about my clothes, but I did make an emphasis that I was busy working for these last 4 years, just not for a paid wage. One of the interviewers encouraged me to keep up the work.
I applied for different jobs and have already received some interview requests, so here's to hoping that I do manage to find something.
Good luck on the hunt. 8)
